5 Things to Look for When Choosing a Brand Photographer
You've decided it's time to invest in professional brand photos. Love that for you. But now you're staring at a grid of photographer websites wondering how to actually tell who's right for you, because honestly? They all look good on the surface.
Here's the thing: not every photographer who takes pretty pictures knows how to photograph a brand. And when you're investing real money into images that represent your business, "pretty" isn't enough.
Here's what to actually pay attention to when you're making this decision.
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
1. Look at full shoots, not just highlight shots
Every photographer has a killer hero image. What you want to see is whether the work holds up across an entire shoot.
Pull up their portfolio and ask yourself: Can I find 3–5 full galleries or shoot examples? Do the mood, lighting, colors, and composition stay consistent from shot to shot? Does it feel cohesive — or does it fall apart when you look past the standout images?
You want someone who can create a library of images that all feel like they belong together, because that's what your brand actually needs.
2. Ask whether they understand brand strategy, not just aesthetics
There's a difference between a photographer who makes things look beautiful and one who thinks about who you're trying to reach and what you want your audience to feel.
When you're looking at their work or talking to them, ask yourself: Do these images communicate something? Do I get a sense of who this person's client is just from the photos? Does this photographer ask about your audience, your offers, your positioning, or do they just talk about lighting and backdrops?
Images that don't connect to your brand strategy are expensive decorations.
3. Get clear on what you're actually walking away with
Before you book anyone, understand what the deliverables actually look like. How many images? What types: headshots, lifestyle, detail shots, behind-the-scenes? What formats and sizes are included?
You want a photographer who can give you a versatile image library you can actually use: website, social content, email newsletters, pitch decks, ads. If the answer to "what do I get?" is vague, that's a red flag.
4. Ask about licensing upfront
This one trips people up. When you hire a photographer, you typically receive the images for personal or organic use, but if you want to run paid ads, there may be additional licensing involved.
Ask before you book: What usage rights come with my package? Are there restrictions on where or how I can use the images? Is there a difference between organic and paid ad usage?
It doesn't have to be complicated, but it does need to be clear, and ideally in writing.
5. Pay attention to process and how they make you feel
The best images come from shoots where you felt good: confident, comfortable, like yourself. That doesn't happen by accident. It happens because your photographer created an environment where it could.
Look at their pre-shoot process: Do they use mood boards or shot lists? Do they help you plan your outfits and props? How do they direct people who aren't models (i.e., most of us)?
And beyond process, notice how you feel when you talk to them. Do they ask good questions? Do they listen? Do you feel like they actually get what you're trying to build?
Chemistry matters. You're trusting this person to show up for one of the most visible investments in your business.
The bottom line
Brand photography is a business investment, and like any investment, it pays to do your homework. The right photographer isn't just someone who takes good photos. They're someone who knows how to translate your story into images that work.
When in doubt, trust your gut. If their portfolio makes you feel something and they have a clear process and they ask smart questions about your brand? That's your person.
